Weird-flavored pineapple. I am not sure if it is because it is rotting.
Subway - sounds like a great treat, but my experience there has twice proved it is my least favorite restaurant here. The service is SLOOOOW and the servers don't care about what you want at all. I asked for a Spicy Italian today, and the lady kept having me repeat what I said, and eventually said "if it's spicy, it's not Italian." Umm, helloooo learn the menu, you work there!! The tomatoes are always half yellow. Today she gave me the worst looking ones and so we asked for darker red ones. Hahah. The ranch is not white or homogenous. Ehh. (I didn't order it). Both times the servers just want to make the sandwich for you, instead of giving you what you ask for. And the bread is stale. Sigh.
And the thing I keep meaning to blog about every morning - the cereal. If I didn't already say, the selection in the grocery stores is really funny. Hopefully I'll never try to go in there with a list. If you see something you want, you should get it because who knows if they'll ever have it in stock again (ex. whipped cream). They have a LOT of ketchup and mayonnaise in stock. Like half an aisle. Most aisles look completely wiped out because they just don't restock on time. There are a few good comforting American foods - Lays Cheddar Stax - my blessing!! Doritos (don't exactly taste the same). Oreos - another blessing (though not double stuffed). Oh never mind that's pretty much it. Hahah. So, what I had been really taking for granted in the US all those years was the cereal aisle with an endless selection of whatever kind of cereal you could think of. Here they have about 6 types of cereal, made by about 4 brands. So you can get Corn Flakes, Frosted Flakes (called Zurritos or something, but they still feature Tony the Tiger), Special K, Froot Loops, and Choco Safari (ok not American but that is their version of Cocoa Puffs). That's it, with the addition of a few knockoff brands of each of those types. The funny thing to me is that I like Corn Flakes a lot now, which I would never think of eating in the US. And I'm glad they at least have Froot Loops. Life would be better if they just had Honey Nut Cheerios (I mean, everyone loves those). And I can't remember if I said this before or not but I think it's hilarious that I am so thankful for Kraft Singles (American cheese) so I don't have to get the disgusting block of cheese, and in the US I could barely stand to look at Kraft Singles b/c I don't think to think of how processed it is. But thank God it is appealing to me here. Something delicious to think about is the smoothies they offer at every restaurant for about $2, our little tea restaurant that has every flavor imaginable, fried pasteles/empanadas on every corner, and the cookies/baked goods that are always in our apartment! :)
Praise - we got a water truck today!!! (2 actually). Last night we had only half an hour of water for the afternoon and evening combined. They were pushing it b/c last time 4 floors didn't pay for the water truck (which I think they got 8 of last time). They knew we gringos would shell out though.
Thanks for everyone who reads this and comments! I appreciate it :)

Wow - can you even imagine what challenges being a missionary in the jungle would face? At least you can put your head on your pillow at night and not have to worry about lions, tigers, snakes and large insects carrying you off!
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to talk to you about using clorox on your food.....bad idea! Stick to the vinegar/water. Clorox (bleach) is very toxic! Could be the source of your recent abdominal pain.
I LOVE your blog...it's sooooo you, Sydni Gould! You are a great writer! So glad you learned to "journal" when you were young...it's paying off now.
Thankful there are good adventures to balance out the bad! God is going ahead of you wherever you go and He's not ever surprised at what is happening!
Keep smiling and shining the love of Christ to everyone you meet! They WILL be attracted to you and WANT what you have in your life!!!
